MHS Policy on Strays

Reporting Requirements:
Any found animal must be reported to Missaukee Humane Society (MHS) or the appropriate authority (local animal control or the Sheriff’s Department) within 48 hours, in accordance with Michigan law.

Since the late 1980s, Missaukee County has not had an animal control department. All animal control matters are handled by the Missaukee County Sheriff’s Department at (231) 839-4338 ext. 1.  MHS currently maintains an agreement with Missaukee County to accept and house stray dogs found within the county when space allows. MHS does not receive compensation for this service — it is provided solely as a public benefit to support animal welfare and community safety.

Definition of a Stray: A stray animal is one found running at large or without an apparent owner.

Daily Reporting: All stray admissions are reported by MHS to the Missaukee County Sheriff’s Department.

Holding Periods (per Michigan law):  4 days for animals without identification; 7 days for animals with identification (collar, tags, or microchip).

If an owner is known, a certified letter is issued as required by law.

Reclaim Fees & Intake Policy: A per-day pick-up fee is charged to reclaim your pet. If an animal is brought in without identification and the owner is not immediately known, vaccinations may be administered upon intake. These vaccination costs are not included in the daily reclaim fee. Animals not reclaimed within their holding period may be evaluated for adoption once the stray hold has expired.

Identification Protocols:
When a stray is found…

  • Check for a valid license tag.

  • Have the animal scanned for a microchip before or upon intake.

This enables the fastest possible reunification with the rightful owner.
